The Short Version

A general practice in the
heart of Parramatta.

Parramatta has a large number of law firms, ranging from single-solicitor practices to branch offices of national firms. We sit somewhere in between: a small, established general practice where you deal directly with a solicitor rather than being passed down to a junior.

The firm was founded here in 1977 and has never moved suburb. That continuity means we know the local courts and registries, and in many cases we are now acting for the third generation of the same family.

If your matter is outside what we do, we will tell you honestly and point you toward someone who can help.

What to look for in a Parramatta law firm

Whether or not you end up instructing us, these are the questions worth asking any firm before you engage them.

How long have they practised locally?

Longevity matters. A firm that has practised in the same suburb for decades knows the local courts, the local property market, and the local community. James Papas Solicitors has operated from Hassall Street, Parramatta since 1977.

Will you deal with a solicitor or a clerk?

At larger firms, your matter is often handled by a junior or a paralegal while a partner supervises. Ask who will actually be working on your file, and who you will speak to when you call.

Are fees explained upfront?

A good firm gives you a written costs estimate before starting work, and explains what is included. Be cautious of any firm that will not discuss fees clearly at the outset.

Do they practise in the area you need?

Some firms specialise narrowly; others handle a broad range. A general practice can be an advantage where your matter crosses areas, for example a property settlement that involves both family law and conveyancing.

Can they communicate in your language?

Parramatta is one of the most culturally diverse areas in Australia. Being able to discuss a complex legal matter in your first language makes a real difference. Our team speaks English, Greek and Tamil.

What do their clients say?

Independent reviews are one of the better indicators available. Look for reviews that describe the actual experience of working with the firm, not just the outcome.

Local Knowledge

We know the courts and
registries in Parramatta.

Parramatta is a major legal centre. The Parramatta Justice Precinct on George Street houses the Parramatta Local Court, the District Court, the Children's Court, and a registry of the Federal Circuit and Family Court of Australia. NSW Land Registry Services and the NSW Civil and Administrative Tribunal also have a significant presence in the area.

Practically, this means that if your matter needs to go to court, it is usually a short walk from our office rather than a trip into the Sydney CBD. We appear at Parramatta Local Court regularly for traffic and civil matters.
